Hearty Beef Stew

An oldie but a goodie!


  • 1 kg chuck steak
  • cut into 2.5cm cubes
  • 5 carrots, sliced
  • 2 onions, cut in quarters
  • 3 celery stalks, sliced
  • 1 large can of tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup quick-cooking tapioca ~ this is also known as SAGO (PUDDING) ~ can be purchased at Woolworths and is an essential ingredient!
  • 1 whole clove (or pinch ground cloves)
  • 2 bayleaves
  • salt and pepper to taste.


  1. Trim all fat from meat. Put all the ingredients in your crock-pot / slow cooker.
  2. Mix thorougly.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 12 hours, HIGH 5-6 hours.
